REGULARS from two Stourbridge pubs are preparing for battle on the rugger pitch this weekend.

A team from the Waggon and Horses, in Worcester Street, will take on rivals from the Robin Hood, in Collis Street, on Sunday (November 30) - but it's all for a good cause.

They will be raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support when they line-up at Dudley Kingswinford Rugby Club, for kick-off at 2pm.

Several players from both DK's and Stourbridge Rugby Club have promised to turn up and play to support the event and give the game a bit of momentum.

Lynne Allen, who is one of the organisers, said: "The game came about following a challenge between Dan Wilkes, who is landlord of the Waggon and Horses and Richard Taylor, who drinks at the Robin Hood. At first, everybody thought it was just talk and would never happen - but it is now.

"Both pubs have a big rugby following, which is how the match was born and both sides are taking the game deadly seriously."

She added: "The Robin Hood side have already been in training for the past six to seven weeks, while I understand the Waggon and Horses have been going through their paces at Stourbridge Rugby Club. Both sides are made up of people who have either never played rugby before, or not played for a very long time."

It is hoped the event will raise a considerable amount of cash as all players have been given sponsorship forms and there will also be a raffle on the day.

Admission is free but spectators will be asked to make a donation to the cause.

Supporters can also donate by texting RUGA99 followed by the amount, to 70070.
