LYE has said farewell to its long-serving vicar after two decades of service to the community.

Rev Simon Falshaw and his wife Sue have called it a day at Christ Church in Lye High Street.

The vicar, who has been priest in charge at the church for 20 years, held his final service on Sunday January 28 which was followed by a farewell buffet with people in the community.

Stourbridge MP Suzanne Webb and Lye councillor Dave Borley were among those there to wave him off. The MP also presented him and his wife with House of Commons mugs saying Honourable Gentleman and Honourable Lady as a goodbye gift.

Ms Webb said: “Simon has been a reassuring presence in Lye for two decades and I know the community is very sorry to see him go.

“He has touched the lives of many people over the years and he is a popular and respected figure – very much highlighted by the packed church on Sunday for his final service.

“Myself and Dave wish him and his wife the very best in their new endeavours. I hope they come back to visit soon.”

Rev Falshaw and his wife plan to move back to Sheffield to be closer to family in due course.

He said: “It has been a great privilege to serve the people of Lye and we will miss the community very much.”

Archdeacon of Dudley, Nikki Groarke, said of his departure: “The Rev Simon Falshaw has been a dedicated servant of the parish of Lye and the Stambermill for over 20 years, sharing the love of Jesus with all who live and work there.

“Now that he has taken a well-deserved retirement, we have started the process to find a new vicar to look after the congregation of Christchurch and the surrounding community.”
