THE latest phase in the systematic disempowerment of the working people by this government is the proposal to enforce all schools to become academies.

By what they call ‘freeing the schools from local government control’ they are effectively disenfranchising the local community, who up until now have been in a position to exert pressure on local councils regarding the management (or mismanagement) of schools – and if necessary to change the council through the ballot box.

Academies are answerable to virtually no one, and like some of the so-called ‘free schools’ are vulnerable to being taken over by factions with narrow ideological, political or religious agendas.

Local council control is not a hindrance to education, it is a safeguard of it.
