STOURBRIDGE’S Sam Eggington took a giant step towards a shot at the British Welterweight title when he beat Denton Vassell in Manchester on Saturday.
Eggington stopped the experienced Vassell in the eighth round for what is arguably the best result of his fledgling career.
Victory in the title eliminator means he is now in line for a shot at taking the British Lonsdale belt from former sparring partner Frankie Gavin from Birmingham.
The 20-year-old always looked in control against the former Commonwealth champion and eventually referee Richie Davies stepped in when Eggington had his opponent pinned in the corner after a right hand cross, a punch he had used to such great effect throughout.
